The sun is setting on another great weekend for Bamboo Engineering, an outright podium and 4 independent podiums represents the haul, all this from a track that favours the rear wheel drive BMW’s.
This leaves the Bamboo drivers as follows in the drivers championships, Nash 1st in the Yokohama Trophy and 5th overall, MacDowall 2nd in the Yokohama Trophy and 8th overall. Both drivers had a very productive set of free practices and qualifying, showing good pace and preparing well, Nash was fastest overall in Free Practice 2 and both drivers qualified in the top 10 with MacDowall taking the all important Pole Position on the reverse grid. Race 1 saw the usual first 2 corners create excitement, Both MacDowall and Nash were held up by a minor incident causing them to loose ground to the BMW of Coronel and Chevrolet of Chilton.
Both MacDowall and Nash pushed admirably to close on Chilton and Coronel but unfortunately ran out of laps and passed the finish line in 8th and 9th respectively.
MacDowall started on pole for the second race with Nash on P4 but both MacDowall and Nash suffered wheelspin and were engulfed by the pack, the third corner played host the largest accident of the weekend but both Chevrolets avoided trouble and made ground, MacDowall jumping to 3rd and Nash in 4th.
MacDowall pushed very hard to gain ground but as the BMW of Bennani warmed up the young Cumbrian just couldn't get close enough to challenge.
Nash got his head down and put in some great laps and defended admirably against increasing pressure in the latter stages from a pair of WTCC masters, namely Coronel and Muller but maintained his position to finish 4th.
Alex MacDowall, “Our outright pace wasn’t their this weekend as the track is a favourite of the rear wheel drive cars, Despite a disappointing qualifying it was important to finish race one and capitalise on the pole of race 2. I was pleased with 3rd but still have more work to do on my starts.”
James Nash, “I’m still getting to grips with the car but the second race was a great battle, I’m really proud that I kept both Coronel and Muller at bay to get a 4th, it’s not about finishing 4th but the fact I am in a place to hold my own against world champions.”
Richard Coleman, “It’s been a pleasing weekend for Bamboo, an outright and 4 independent podiums is a good day in the office for a circuit that doesn’t suit us but the Salzbergring will be strong for us.”
The championship heads to the Salzburgring in Austria in 2 weekends time, full coverage will be available on Eurosport.
