Whincup vows for “hard and fair” title fight in Sydney
Jamie Whincup says he will fight his teammate Shane van Gisbergen “hard and fair” during this weekend’s Supercars title decider in Sydney.

Van Gisbergen, who topped today’s second practice session, heads into the weekend with the upper hand. A 191-point lead means he just needs a fifth place from either of the two races to secure a maiden Supercars title.
That makes Whincup’s chances of a seventh title reasonably slim unless van Gisbergen fails to finish tomorrow’s race.
Despite effectively needing his teammate to DNF, Whincup made it clear today that there will be “nothing untoward” should the pair find themselves racing each other on-track tomorrow.
“We’ll go out there and race hard, race fair, there will be nothing untoward,” he said.
“I’m sure we don’t have it all our own way like in New Zealand. There will be four or five other cars in the mix as well, so we’ll just to get through that.
“My job is to try and get up the front.”
Renowned hard racer van Gisbergen added that he is willing to play the conservative role this weekend, but will wait until Sunday before letting the mathematics of the title race dictate his driving.
“Today was about getting the car fast and comfortable and we managed to achieve that,” said van Gisbergen.
“We need to have a good qualifying, start up the front and stay out of trouble.
“If you need to conserve at some point I guess I will, but I’m not just going to pull over and let people past.
“The aim is to get the best result on Saturday and see how we end up.”
