IRWIN RACING AIMS FOR SANDOWN TOP 10
IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison feels that he has the equipment to propel him to more top 10 results at Sandown Raceway this weekend.
The IRWIN Tools Ford was one of the most competitive cars on the track last Friday and Saturday at the Falken Tasmania Challenge, where it was a regular in the practice top 10 and then backed it up in the first race to finish just outside the top five.
Sunday was frustrating for the team. Davison was approaching the top 10 late in the weekend’s second race when James Courtney hit him from behind ruining any chance of a good result.
Had Davison finished the race where he was prior to the incident he would have been less than 20 points adrift of eighth place in the championship. Damage to the rear of the IRWIN Ford forced an unscheduled return to pit lane for repairs, a lowly 26th place result and a gap of 49 points to eighth place sitter Lee Holdsworth.
With last weekend well and truly behind them, Davison and IRWIN Racing are striving for back to back top-10 results, with the end of season aim being to finish inside the championship’s top eight.
What IRWIN Racing’s Alex Davison had to say:
“Sandown is unique; these days there are no race tracks built in suburbia. It’s got a bit of a street circuit feel, there is not a lot of run-off, there’re Armco barriers everywhere and it hasn’t changed a lot since it was built, it's got that old school feel to it. It’s got a fantastic section of track over the top of the hill, it’s really quick, you need to take a deep breath and take the brave pills before you head out over there. The IRWIN Ford was reasonably good in Tasmania last weekend. Putting Sunday’s result to one side, it was satisfying to be back in the top 10 on Saturday. Based on the speed that we had at Bathurst, Gold Coast and Tasmania, I think we can be competitive at Sandown as well.”
What IRWIN Racing’s engineer Dan Kroehn had to say:
“Hopefully we’ll take the Tasmanian form over to Sandown. We've been working really hard. The enduros didn’t go our way, we had the speed at Bathurst and the Gold Coast but unfortunately due to on-track incidents we didn't get to convert this speed into points. Coming away from Tassie, we finally got the results that we've been chasing for and put them on the board. I definitely think we can carry that form over to Sandown.”
