Second place finish for Pye in opening Dunlop Series race

Triple Eight Race Engineering pilot Scott Pye dominated his home-track in today’s on-track activities at the Coates Hire Ipswich 300, securing pole position and ending second in the Dunlop Series opening race.

Pye was an unstoppable force in this morning’s 30 minute qualifying session, the 22-year old bolted green hard tyres on the Monster Energy/Gear Wrench supported Commodore and posted the two quickest laps of the session, putting him on pole position for the afternoon’s race.

“Qualifying went really well, we had a really good set up and in the last ten minutes of the session we pumped out three times which were really quick, two of them quick enough for pole,” Pye said.

“Being the fourth round in and to have taken two poles already is fantastic.

Defending his position off the start line, Pye held lead for majority of the 15 lap race but with Ford driver Chaz Mostert heavily on his Holden’s tail he got pipped from the post with two laps to go.

After a hard fought battle, Pye was unable to match Mostert’s speed and crossed the finish line second.

“We started from pole and made a good start to hold the lead all the way until two laps to go when we were tagged from the rear and pushed wide onto the front-straight where someone was able to overtake me.

“From then on I really had to get it home, I didn’t want to lose any positions so I tried my hardest to stay on the car infront and brought the Monster Energy/ Gear Wrench supported Holden second,” Pye concluded.

The Dunlop Series will see a reverse top-ten grid in Sunday’s opening race at 9.30am (AEST), Pye to start ninth. The final race of the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 for the Dunlop Series will commence at 2.15pm (AEST).
