After a few tweaks, however, Coulthard leapt back into the top ten and says tomorrow's two practice sessions should see further improvements before qualifying.

Trusting the limits of your car is a big part of getting the best out of Mount Panorama and Fabian Coulthard says today's practice sessions delivered him the predictability he needs.

The Lockwood Racing driver, who finished the day eighth fastest, says the car did not inspire confidence in the day's opening sessions in which he finished 18th and co-driver Luke Youlden finished 21st.

After a few tweaks, however, Coulthard leapt back into the top ten and says tomorrow's two practice sessions should see further improvements before qualifying at 3pm.

"The car was much better in the last session. We've gone from a totally unpredictable and none-confidence-inspiring car to something I can lean on and push. We're still a fair way off doing a 2min 8.3 [today's quickest time] but I can get confidence and push again so we'll have something to work with in tomorrow's practice sessions.

"In the first session today I was under driving a lot and had no confidence in the car. You can create so much damage so quickly around here so I took a laid back approach to the weekend. Now that it's better I feel we can be a little bit more aggressive."

"We're definitely struggling with the rear grip. It affects you everywhere. It affects your confidence across the top but we're quicker than car 8 there so maybe I'm being too conservative. We're definitely slow in sectors one and two. We're just finding the car really.

"I think we've got something slightly out of balance but it could be tyres as well. We've been in this position before. It's the same as any practice day where you're unsure about where you're at. We've got to be wary of making too many changes in case it's just down to a bad set of tyres."
