The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season got off to a solid start for Spencer Massey. The Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team unloaded a Top Fuel dragster on Saturday at Pomona that acted more like a consistent bracket drag car capable of replicating runs within thousandths of a second.

En route to qualifying No. 5 at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals season opener at Pomona, Massey posted 3.768-second qualifying in each of his two Saturday sessions.

"There are definitely some pretty quick cars here at Pomona and I'm just happy to be sitting in one of them," said Massey. "Phil (Shuler) and Todd (Okuhara) are making great calls this weekend and we have some great data. Going 3.76 twice was great for our team today.

"Having a car like we do heading into eliminations definitely gives us some confidence. We want to get this 2014 NHRA season started out right and that would be with finishing the day in the Winner's Circle."

Massey has done that once before, in 2012, and it was a dream come true. Doing it for the second time would be twice as nice for the Texas native who grew up a fan of NHRA drag racing.

"I love Pomona. This is a place you dream about coming to as a little kid so it's just great to be here. Getting to the Winner's Circle for a second time here would just be beyond anything I could've ever dreamed of."
