Lucas Oil's Arana Sr. off to strong start in Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 17) - Hector Arana Sr. put his Lucas Oil Buell atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle chart during the first two rounds of qualifying for the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway on Friday.

Now, Arana would love nothing more than to give the Wally to Lucas Oil co-founders Forrest and Charlotte Lucas, on Sunday.

"With the streak the V-Rods are having, wouldn't this be the greatest moment if we were to pull one off and hand Forrest and Charlotte Lucas the trophy?" Arana Sr. said. "They're the best sponsor you could ever have."

Arana Sr. earned the provisional No. 1 with a pass of 6.884 seconds at 192.63 mph in Friday's first session.

"I was surprised my first run was an .88," Arana Sr. said. "I just couldn't believe it. But the bike hooked up and left good. I'm really pleased with the preparation of this track. But it's always been great over here."

If the No. 1 holds, it would be his fourth of the season, 21st of his career and second at Brainerd. Arana Sr. also earned the No. 1 qualifier here in 2009, when he also won the race.

But that's not the only reason why Arana Sr. loves coming to Brainerd.

"There's something special over here," Arana Sr. said. "It's not just the track, but the people working the track, the Safety Safari, the fans - it's just like the whole attitude is different. It seems like they're more relaxed, like we're supposed to enjoy this. That's the feeling that I get. I'm having a great time and things are just falling into place."

Arana's streak of qualifying in the top four appears to be safe. He's qualified fourth or better in all eight races this season and has done so for the last 16 events dating back to 2011.
