Massey ready to make new memories at track near St. Louis, wants sole ownership of Top Fuel points lead in Countdown
BROWNSBURG, Ind. (Sept. 26, 2012) - Spencer Massey and the Prestone/FRAM team will venture into a some unfamiliar territory this weekend when the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series returns to Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis for the first time since 2010.
Massey hasn't raced a Top Fuel dragster at the track since 2009 when he advanced to the semifinal round while driving for Don Prudhomme Racing.
"I've actually only raced there once," Massey said. "I've been to the track quite a few times working as a crew member. I like the track and it's always been a great facility so I'm excited to go back."
And this time he will arrive tied for first place with Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship. Brown edged Massey for the championship Sunday at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Massey's crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler already have a plan set for their first pass at Gateway during the AAA NHRA Midwest Nationals that begin with two qualifying sessions on Friday.
"We'll just look at the conditions with what our weather station says, look at the track temperature and other conditions," Okuhara said. "Being where we are in the points, we'll get to watch a lot of cars go down the track in front of us and that well help us determine what we want to try and run out there."
Massey isn't concerned about what his first pass on the track in three years will be like because he has confidence in the team.
"Whenever I have a great team like I have with Todd, Phil and this Prestone team, it makes me comfortable. I know that I can get in the car and go down any racetrack with them behind me."
The following are Massey's statistics and other event notes for this weekend's return to Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.
