Tony Stewart was involved in a crash at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa while doing what he loves to do - racing sprint cars. The three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion was transported to a local hospital where he has undergone surgery for a broken tibia and fibula on his right leg.

The owner/driver in the Cup series also is the owner of the Eldora Speedway which is one of the top dirt-tracks in North America, and he still challenges for the win in sprint cars.

Per the track that was hosting the ASCS event, Stewart was conscious and talking to responders after being placed on a stretcher.

Stewart was leading the 30-lap feature race that was during the late hours of the night when the crash took place with five laps remaining. Per the reports from the speedway, Josh Higday's car spun on Turn 4 and collected the top three cars. Besides Stewart, Tasker Phillips and Tony Shilling were also involved.

Stewart-Haas Racing spokesman Mike Arning stated that “Stewart will miss at least this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen.”

Arning added, “… a replacement has not been named and it's unknown how long Stewart will be out overall.”

Over the past months, questions of the safety of racers has come to the forefront with severe injuries or deaths. When Stewart crashed just one week ago at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada. Those who viewed it said it was quite nasty considering he flipped five times. The Indiana native was unhurt. It was not the first time that he has had close calls this year.

A few days ago while racing his Cup car at Pocono, Stewart brushed off the sprint car incidents by commenting to reporters: "You mortals have got to learn. You guys need to watch more sprint car videos and stuff. It was not a big deal. It's starting to get annoying this week about that, so that was just an average sprint car wreck. When they wreck they get upside down like that. That was not a big deal."
