Cherie Putnam thought she would take a chance when NASCAR Pinty's Series Director Alex Nagy decided to step down last October and has that paid dividends for the Windsor, Ontario, Canada native.

Putnam was named the new NASCAR Pinty's Series Director and also made history becoming the first female leader of NASCAR's only sanctioned series based in Canada.

I'm honored that I was selected to be the new series director. I loved working as an official with the series for the past five years and I look forward to this new challenge.

She also becomes the first female director in the history of the series and just the second female director in the history of the NASCAR Hometracks program.

"It's exciting and I'm very happy to have this opportunity," Putnam told Motorsport.com.

Putnam is the fourth director of the series since NASCAR took over operations of the series formerly known as the CASCAR Series in 2007. Brad Moran, who was series director prior to Nagy, now serves as Director of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

While she's only been formerly on the job for less than a week, Putnam is already reaching out to competitors and owners.

"The response has been positive and I've already had several car owners reach out to me," Putnam said. "We have a great group of teams and drivers coming back this season along with our young champion Cayden Lapcevich so I can't wait to get the season going."

While she is familiar with the competitors, officials and track operators, Putnam realizes she'll see things a little differently from the director's point of view now in her new role.

"I'll be busy as there's a lot to learn from a director's perspective," she added. "While I was familiar with a lot of operations working as an official, the director has to get a little more involved in the details of the series. I look forward being ready to go and help keep this series growing in Canada."

The NASCAR Pinty's Series is part of the NASCAR Hometracks program that features developmental series throughout North America with several current and former NASCAR Pinty's Series competitors also racing in one of the three national series NASCAR operates in the US and Canada.

Two-time series champion D.J. Kennington will attempt to make his first Daytona 500 next week with former championship crew chief Mario Gosselin also scheduled to compete in Daytona in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Last season, Alex Tagliani also drove in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Team Penske and Alex Labbé also made his first national series start at Phoenix International Raceway.

The 2017 NASCAR Pinty's Series season gets underway in May with the annual Victoria Day Weekend race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and will feature 13 races in five different Canadian provinces from May through October.
