Lapcevich clinches 2016 title as Hathaway dominates Kawartha 250

The 16-year-old from Grimsby was beaten only by Jason Hathaway, who dominated the 12th and final race of the season, also his last as a full-time driver in NASCAR Canada.

Here is how the race unfolded:

Lap 1

Cayden Lapcevich takes the green flag and becomes the 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion. He also becomes the youngest-ever champion in NASCAR’s history.

Lap 8
Theetge, who started from pole, and Klutt are starting to pull away. They lead Lacroix, Kennington, Lapcevich, Hathaway, Dumoulin and Ranger.

Lap 40
Theetge is now breaking away from Klutt, who has to fend off Kennington. He has to surrender second place on lap 45. Lapcevich is still fourth ahead of Hathaway, Lacroix, Dumoulin and Ranger.

Lap 51
Hathaway goes by Lapcevich and joins in the fight for second. By lap 58, he’s overtaken both Klutt and Kenington.

Lap 64
Hathaway, Klutt and Labbé stay out as all the other leaders pit under the first caution. Baker has slowed down in turn 2. On lap 66, Tagliani picks up a one-lap penalty for pitting outside his box.

Lap 125
Dumoulin overtakes Kennington and Lynch to take fourth. Up front, Hathaway still leads Labbé and Lapcevich.

Lap 145
Another caution. Ranger has spun in turn 1. Three laps later, Hathaway, Labbé, Lapcevich, Dumoulin and Kennington all pit. Tagliani leads as the race resumes on lap 154. But in the space of a few laps, he starts losing positions. Dilley takes over the lead ahead of Dumoulin, Hathaway, Labbé and Lapcevich.

Lap 174
Hathaway makes a move for the lead and starts pulling away from Labbé and Lapcevich. By lap 205, he’s ahead by about 10-12 car lengths.

Lap 225
Even with the title already in his pocket, Lapcevich seems to have no intentions of coasting to the finish. He goes past Alex Labbé, but will have to settle for second: Hathaway is too far ahead.

Lap 250
Hathaway wins the Kawartha 250 ahead of Lapcevich, Labbé, Kennington, Dumoulin. Dilley, Micks, Tagliani, Klutt and Lynch complete the top-10.
