Sachsenring MotoGP: Lorenzo escapes injury in practice crash

Andrea Iannone ended up fastest in a rain-hit first practice session for the German MotoGP round at the Sachsenring, as reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo was among three riders to crash in the opening stages.

The 45-minute session began in cool, dry conditions before the rain fell just shy of the one-third mark, by which time Lorenzo, Stefan Bradl and Scott Redding had all suffered falls at Turn 11.

Redding was the first, the Pramac rider's crash occurring mere minutes into the session, before Lorenzo and Bradl both fell near-simultaneously.

Lorenzo appeared to hurt his left wrist in the impact with the gravel trap, and was taken to the medical centre for a precautionary check. The Spaniard was declared fit, having escaped suffering a fracture.

Before the rain hit, Ducati's Andrea Iannone had set the quickest time on a 1m23.702s, knocking the Repsol Honda of Marc Marquez off the top spot by 0.414s.

Danilo Petrucci on the other Pramac machine was third quickest, another 0.041s back, ahead of Valentino Rossi on the best of the Yamahas and the second works Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso.

With the rain easing late in the session, several riders went back out for exploratory runs - including Alvaro Bautista, Cal Crutchlow and Bradl, using his second Aprilia machine - but no competitive times were set.
