The Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC) has a wonderful education program called SafeisFast.com, presented by Honda. There are many aspects to SafeisFast, led by the Q&A sessions available to interested parties around the world and hosted by a different driver every month.

This is an excellent way for those wanting to know how to break into the sport or how to hone their skills can get answers from those that have been there and done that. Right now the “Ask a Pro” driver is former Formula 1 racer and GP2 race winner Karun Chandhok.

With the 82nd annual 24 Heures du Mans about to take place this Saturday and Sunday, the RRDC presents a new video entitled, “The Art of Endurance Driving.” It couldn’t arrive at a more opportune time for those taking part in this 54-car exercise and is being promoted by RRDC president Bobby Rahal. As a video tutorial, “The Art of Endurance Driving” allows those that partake in these grueling exercises to explain how and why they are so darn successful.

The primary aspect is one you never expect from any racer, but one that’s essential in endurance competition: patience.

Hurley Haywood, who’s won the Rolex 24 at Daytona five times (a feat equalled last year by Scott Pruett) explains the sea change that has occurred in all aspects of endurance competition over the years and states that events like Le Mans and Daytona have become “24 individual sprint races.” As the cars become better, as tires get more robust and the caliber of competitors increase, it’s necessary to make adjustments - this video explains how the best accomplish those goals.

Listen to other race-winning drivers like Jan Magnussen, Patrick Long, Anthony Davidson and more as they delineate what makes them so adept in these endurance races and how they persevere to be there at the end.

This video joins similar items that talk about adapting to different downforce levels, defending vs blocking (hmmm, there’s a lot of pro drivers who could get info from this one), overtaking, braking, tire management, racing in the rain, pit stops, and more.

Even for couch potatoes readying for 24 hours of endurance race-watching, this video can come in handy. Check it out as you prepare to take on the greatest endurance race of them all in France this weekend...
