The 2014 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship heads to its final oval race weekend of the season at The Milwaukee Mile. Gabby Chaves heads into the weekend with an 18 point lead over Jack Harvey and 24 points over Zach Veach.
However, an 18 point lead is not a large lead at this point of the season, especially after the Mid-Ohio race weekend.
Before Mid-Ohio, I had overlooked Jack Harvey. I didn’t think he was going to have a very good shot at winning the Indy Lights championship. I didn’t think he was going to win maximum points for that race weekend. I was wrong.
Harvey vaulted himself to second in the points standings and could have a great shot at winning the championship if he can continue the form he has shown all season since he hasn’t had any finishes below fifth place.
Chaves will have a lot to say about that, however. Chaves hasn’t had a finish below third place since his dismal race weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, and that kind of consistency wins championships.
The last driver with a chance to win the title is Zach Veach. He started out the season strong with two wins, a second and a third, but couldn’t capitalize on Chaves’s bad weekend at the IMS road course. He ran well at Milwaukee last year and could be a spoiler in the race this year, but it will be hard to beat Chaves since he has won the other two oval races that have been held this year.
