Dale Coyne Racing and Mike Conway took home the checkered flag in the first of two 70 lap races at the Belle Isle street course in Detroit.

Conway started the race from the second spot, and remained up front for much of the race driving for a team who he had never driven for before.

"All thanks to the team," said Conway in victory lane. "I feel good, I wanted to stay out and do some more laps. I might be sore when I wake up tomorrow. I am looking forward to tomorrow."

Conway stepped back from IndyCar before the final race of 2012, citing the danger of oval races as his reason for leaving.

He was asked in victory lane if he would run on the oval in Texas next week if given the opportunity, but he said no.

"I love to do the street courses though," Conway said.

Conway beat reigning champion Ryan Hunter-Reay to the line by a large margin.

"I was struggling (during the second stint). I was waiting for someone to throw me a life preserver," said Hunter-Reay. "I think we are beating up our tire a little too much."

Hunter-Reay added that he will ask Conway what he needs to do for tomorrow's race.

"Mike did a great job…I am going to go ask Mike what his deal is," said Hunter-Reay. "He is one heck of a talent."

The race was slowed by four cautions, the first happening in the second turn when A.J. Allmendinger made contact with Scott Dixon causing his car to become airborne. He hit the wall and was out of the race.

"Just a tight start," said Allmendinger. "I had guys on both sides of me. I ran into the back of Dixon and that's my fault. I am glad (Dixon) is still in the race."

The Penske Racing team plans on rebuilding Allmendinger's primary car in time for the green flag tomorrow.
