London, UK – Mike Conway shows his talent on road/street courses again today, by putting the No. 18 Sonny’s BBQ – Dale Coyne Racing machine on pole for tomorrow’s second Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit. This is Conway’s first IndyCar career pole and also the first for Dale Coyne Racing.

With this weekend being made up of two races, qualifying for the second race was a slightly different format from normal. Qualifying groups were determined by the driver’s qualifying result for race one yesterday.

Each group then had 15 minutes to produce their fastest time with the pole award being given to the best overall lap time. Odd-numbered grid positions are then occupied by the pole sitter’s group and even numbered by the other group.

Conway, who was in group two, went out on black tires originally and then switched to primary tires and recorded a quick lap of 78.0977 seconds on the 2.346-mile, 13-turn street course.

Having not been in a car since April, he has shown how competitive he still is on road/street courses and will be looking to continue his success in the races later today and tomorrow.

“We’ve got really good starting position, with second and first, and we couldn’t have asked for much more coming into this weekend,” said Conway on how this weekend has gone. “I was hoping I’d make the Fast Six, but to do it as well as we’ve done is amazing. So big credit goes to the team and my teammate for giving us a good car.”

Commenting on qualifying today, he said. “We just had to hang out and see what we had and it was enough for pole. Excellent job by all the guys at the team at Dale Coyne for making this happen. We’re really, really happy and can’t wait to see how it goes.”

Former IndyCar winner and Manager to Conway, Mark Blundell added; “I am very happy for Mike. To have cut the deal on Tuesday, flown to Detroit on Wednesday and now be starting on the front row today and win pole for tomorrow is extremely impressive. I have managed Mike for seven years and this just shows everyone the talent that he has, it’s a great weekend.”

Race 1 of The Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans is at 3:50pm ET today followed by Race 2 tomorrow at 3:50pm ET. Both races will be broadcast on ABC from 3:30pm ET.
