Twice was not enough as former Williams Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello returned for a third consecutive day to Sebring International Raceway to test the new IndyCar Dallara DW12 for KV Racing Technology on Wednesday.
Barrichello matched times with friend and potential KVRT teammate Tony Kanaan over a test that has now run to a total of more than 200 laps around the central Florida IndyCar test course at Sebring.
If you go purely from joy, it wouldn’t be a problem.
“It’s been a really good morning," said Barrichello. "My feedback I think will be very beneficial to Tony and the whole team. I am satisfied with what we have achieved. I leave Sebring now with a good taste in my mouth."
Though no official times have been released from the test, veteran IndyCar driver Kanaan summed up the results of Barrichello's effort handily by saying," If he wants to do IndyCar, it's in his hands."
"Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport was the fastest on Tuesday, but we had three Brazilians in the top four: Helio Castroneves of Team Penske, Barrichello and myself," Kanaan continued. "Obviously Rubens needs funding like everyone else, but he's more than welcome here.
Barrichello was originally schedule to return to his native Brazil on Wednesday, but changed his plans to rejoin Kanaan on-track with the Chevy-powered 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine behind him.
He also retreated somewhat on a line in the sand he had previously drawn about racing on American ovals. "It is a not a big issue (racing on oval tracks). It is not a problem. There are so many different situations that I could run. I could run on the road tracks only. I could run Indy as the only oval. There are many options available to me."
IndyCar series officials have openly courted the man with the most career F1 starts ever (332). IndyCar's Randy Bernard met Barrichello at the track to welcome him on Monday and to greet the Brazilian's family gathered to watch.
"(Wife) Silvana and I will be talking about this, I'm sure," Barrichello said. "I have to think it through. If you go purely from joy, it wouldn’t be a problem. I still have so much passion for the speed."
“I have an open mind," he said.
