Future Indianapolis car racer Joe Leonard wins the Daytona 200 motorcycle race on the beach at Daytona, Florida, USA (1957).

March 4
Wendell Scott becomes the first black to race on the NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) circuit when he races at Piedmont International Speedway in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. He finishes in 17th place (1961).

David Coulthard wins the Australian Grand Prix in a Mercedes powered McLaren. First Mercedes Formula One victory since Juan Fangio won the 1955 Italian Grand Prix (1997).
