The Italian lowered Gasly's benchmark with his 1m56.607s effort in the final minute, forcing the Red Bull junior, who had led for most of the session, to settle for second.

While the Prema duo is set to start from the front row, title rival Sergey Sirotkin will is set to line up 13th.

The Russian made a mistake on his first flyer and could not fully recover on his second lap nor during the second part of the session.

Gustav Malja was best of the rest behind the Premas in third, the Swede starting his second stint before the rest of the grid to take his best qualifying result in the series

Racing Engineering's Norman Nato and Jordan King will start fourth and fifth respectively, with Arthur Pic claiming sixth.

Raffaele Marciello, fourth in the standings, was seventh as DAMS driver Alex Lynn took eighth, more than a second off the pace.

ART's Nobuharu Matsushita and Carlin's Marvin Kirchhofer were ninth and 10th respectively.
