GP2 Series drivers are in action for the second time in a matter of days – and this weekend’s Budapest double-header is the final event before the annual summer break. Arden racer Luiz Razia arrived in Hungary with a 10-point championship lead and is well placed to maintain that, having qualified fifth for tomorrow’s feature event. Two of his main rivals will start ahead, however, with Davide Valsecchi (DAMS) and James Calado (Lotus GP) lining up second and fourth respectively after a session that began on a damp track but finished in the dry.
The title race is hotting up nicely, but Razia has been a paragon of consistency this season and his customarily calm racecraft will be a distinct advantage at a track that offers precious few passing opportunities. While he faces a tough job at one end of the field, team-mate Simon Trummer can expect the same at the other after qualifying 24th.
Luiz Razia comments:
“I’m pleased with that. The car didn’t feel too well balanced after practice, so we made a few chassis tweaks and things were much better this afternoon. I think I got almost as much as I could from the car in tricky conditions. You always believe you can do a little bit better, but everybody is very closely matched so I can’t be too disappointed. I’m confident that I’ll have a good car for the race and I’m starting on the cleaner side of the track, which is usually an advantage here. I know I can rely on the team to call the right strategy, so another strong points finish is definitely within reach.”
Simon Trummer comments:
“Conditions were really difficult this afternoon. It was obvious that times would improve towards the end of qualifying, but at the same time it was important to get as many laps as possible because I haven’t previously driven a GP2 car at this circuit. Things were a little bit messy in the final minutes, because some drivers were trying to warm up their tyres, having come out of the pits in an effort to make a late improvement, while others were trying to put together quick laps. It’s obviously disappointing not to have done a bit better, but I take heart from my form in recent races. Onwards and upwards!”
