Arden driver Luiz Razia put in yet another solid performance during today’s GP2 Series feature race at Hockenheim, taking seventh place and edging farther away from closest rival Davide Valsecchi in their championship battle.

All but two drivers plumped for wet tyres on a track recently soaked by a brief thunderstorm, but a dry line soon appeared and Razia pitted for slicks on lap six – as did almost everybody else. The Brazilian had been running sixth prior to his stop, but Johnny Cecotto (Addax) and Stéphane Richelmi (Trident) swept from the back of the field to the front as their decision to start on dry rubber paid dividends. Razia faced a long second stint on his fresh tyres, but he looked after them well and resisted fierce late pressure from James Calado (Lotus GP) en route to seventh. DAMS driver Valsecchi finished 13th, outside the points, following a couple of minor incidents.

Razia’s team-mate Simon Trummer started and finished 16th, but had a busy afternoon in the dense midfield traffic.

Luiz Razia comments:

“That was incredibly difficult. I knew the track would dry quickly, but felt the safest option was to start on wets. I think I pitted at about the right time, on lap six, but almost everybody else chose to come in at that point, too, and the stop was a big mess. Davide Valsecchi’s car was blocking part of the pit lane and it was quite difficult to get past him to rejoin. “After that it was important to conserve the tyres for a long stint and I just focused on not making any mistakes. I faced quite a bit of pressure towards the end, but managed to retain seventh place and will start tomorrow’s sprint from the front row. I’m really looking forward to that.”

Simon Trummer comments:

“I made a really good start, but ran wide at the first corner and lost about five positions. Like Luiz and almost everybody else, I opted to come in for slicks on lap six, but the pit lane was incredibly busy and I lost a bit of time before rejoining. It was a really confusing situation and spoiled my afternoon. Generally my pace was pretty good and I hope to underline as much in race two. We’ve had some fairly chaotic races recently, so it would be nice if things are a little more straightforward tomorrow.”
