The second race of the Silverstone GP2 weekend was a bittersweet one for Scuderia Coloni: Fabio Onidi closed the race in 8th place after starting from P22 boasting an amazing recovery drive, while Stefano Coletti retired on the first lap after being punted from behind.

Onidi’s race was a masterpiece, one of the biggest recoveries of the whole GP2 season: the Italian driver had a good start from eleventh row, immediately passing from P22 to 19th place. Then in the first lap he was very cool minded, avoiding the clashes between other drivers to climb to the 13th spot.

Fabio was very aggressive in the first part of the race: he quickly closed the gap on Berthon and passed the Frenchman on lap 3, then overtaking also Crestani for P11. The mid-part of the race saw him fighting with Haryanto, Chilton and Calado for a spot in the top ten, and again Onidi was quick and focused slipping past Chilton and making the most of a contact between Calado and Chilton to take P9. The icing on the cake of a points finish arrived on last lap, when Cecotto went off the track and Onidi inherited a deserved 8th place.

On Coletti’s side, meanwhile, the race ended early after a very promising beginning. Stefano’s start was amazing as he chose to go on the right passing very close to the pit wall: this allowed him to pass a lot of cars, climbing to P13 in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately he was in a very tight pack of cars and at turn 16 one of his rivals punted him from behind, putting an end to his race.

Fabio Onidi: “It was a really good race, but also a difficult one because of the track conditions. I knew that in a race like this making no mistakes was as important as being quick, so I tried to be as focused as I could. In the first laps I was very aggressive because I knew that I needed to make up some ground, then at mid distance I chose to be a bit more cautious and it proved to be a good decision. Passing so many cars on track was fun, and getting a points finish after starting from P22 is a great feeling. I would like to say thanks to Scuderia Coloni for their good job, the car was really good today”.

Stefano Coletti: “It’s real pity, it could have been a great race. I had one of my best starts, gaining eleven places in just two sectors. The car was working great, I felt that passing the others in front of me would have been easy, and I was really looking forward to some very fun laps. Anyway you are not alone on track, and sometimes you have to pay for other’s mistakes. Today it was the case as I was punted from behind, but our pace this weekend makes me confident for next round in Hockenheim”.
