Coletti P13, Onidi P18 in Valencia Qualifying

Scuderia Coloni drivers couldn’t make the most of their potential.

Stefano Coletti and Fabio Onidi closed today’s Qualifying session in 13th and 18th place respectively, meaning that they will start the first race of the GP2 Valencia weekend from seventh and ninth row.

In a very hot spanish afternoon, the session that decided tomorrow’s starting order wasn’t an easy one: an early red flag caused by a driver spinning and remaining stranded on the track actually meant that the first minutes were wasted for everybody. It was a real pity because, as the option tyres proved to be slower than the primes, the first set of rubber was the only one that provided the drivers with a chance for a spot in the highest part of the timesheet.

Having less laps than planned available and hitting some traffic in their quick flyers, both the Scuderia Coloni drivers couldn’t make the most of their potential.

Stefano Coletti: “We hoped for a better result but unluckily it wasn’t possible. Nobody could improve with the Supersofts, and this meant that the lap that counted was the one obtained with the first set of tyres, that was hampered by some traffic. We are also losing some time in the second sector as we are suffering from a bit of oversteer, but we will try to solve that for tomorrow’s race”.

Fabio Onidi: “I’m disappointed because had my time been just three tenths quicker my starting position for tomorrow would have been around P12, close to Stefano and in the middle of the pack. Instead we are 18th, a grid position that doesn’t reflect our potential, even if we are suffering from an oversteer that seems difficult to overcome. Luckily the Valencia circuit is an unusual street track, it’s very wide and it provides some overtaking spots, so I should be able to make up some ground in tomorrow’s feature race”.
