Bright start helps Razia to another podium finish...and Trummer stars, too
Luiz Razia consolidated his GP2 Series points lead with yet another stirring drive in the first of this weekend’s two Budapest races. The Brazilian made a flying start from fifth on the grid, survived a brush with Esteban Gutierrez (Lotus) at the first turn and held third place by the opening lap’s end, behind Max Chilton (Carlin) and Davide Valsecchi (DAMS).
Although the leading group remained closely matched, there were no significant place changes thereafter. Razia made his mandatory tyre stop on the 12th of 37 laps and finished a strong third, just a few seconds behind the top two.
His team-mate Simon Trummer recovered well from yesterday’s disappointing qualifying session. Lining up 24th, the Swiss made steady progress during the opening laps and a long first stint put him second on the road by lap 22. Next time around he passed Trident driver Julian Leal to take a lead he held until finally pitting on lap 29. That dropped him to 15th, but he made up two places before the end and capitalised on his fresh rubber to set the afternoon’s fastest lap.
Luiz Razia comments:
“I made a very good start today – and that was crucial at a circuit with so few overtaking opportunities. It was a long, hard race, but we had a good strategy – and a quick tyre stop. I think I had the pace to be second, but there was no way through and in any case I’m happy to have another podium finish, my eighth this season. I’m starting from the third row again tomorrow – and I’ll be looking to score as many points as possible.”
Simon Trummer comments:
“I had another strong first lap, passing about five cars, then tried to pace myself in the midfield and look after my tyres. I always planned to complete a long first stint and it felt good to lead the race for a while, even if the circumstances were slightly artificial. My pace was good, though, and the car felt absolutely brilliant. This wasn’t my best result of the year but it has been one of my best races and gives me lots of confidence for the sprint. I have only one thing in mind for tomorrow – to attack!”
