After a good start, gaining two positions to eleventh, Sergio was forced to go off the track to avoid a collision. Despite this he held onto 13th slot, showing a good pace in the early laps.

On Lap 5, he was struck in the rear by Berthon, who literally was on top of his car, causing substantial damage to the Spaniard’s car, who had no option other than to pit, wrecking his hopes of achieving a good result in his home race.

Tomorrow, in the shorter sprint race with no pit stop, the F1 Caterham Racing development driver, will start from 24th.

Sergio Canamasas: “I feel helpless about what happened, because I had no chance to avoid it. Berthon made a big mistake pushing me aside.

I had a good pace, and I was able to avoid the start incidents, so I think 8th was a reasonable target, starting tomorrow from pole. Now I will start from the back of the grid.

This is always painful, but it’s worst if you’re racing at home in front of your fans and friends.”
