One of world motorsport’s biggest events, the annual Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix, takes place in the former Portuguese enclave this weekend, 17th/18th November, where former GP-winning team Galaxy Double R Racing will be mounting a two-pronged attack on the 59th staging of the great race.

Fielding a pair of Mercedes-powered Dallara F312 cars, which will be piloted by highly rated Estonian Kevin Korjus and reigning ATS Formula 3 Champion Jimmy Eriksson, the Woking squad is relishing its return to the Circuito da Guia street track.

With key commercial support once again from title sponsor Galaxy Macau, an association which stretches back to 2007 when Double R Racing ran current FIA Formula One World Championship racer Bruno Senna in the Macau F3 GP, the team is in high spirits for the blue riband event.

“We’re really looking forward to being back in Macau, it’s one of the truly great events in all of world motorsport and we’re delighted to have such fantastic support again from Galaxy Macau”, said team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, “I’m super-confident the Mercedes HWA engine is the one to have at Macau and we’ll be working as hard as ever to fight at the front.

“You need a bit of lady luck in Macau, a street race always carries a lot of surprises and things can go wrong in the blink of an eye.

The drivers have got to have maximum focus and, although Kevin and Jimmy aren’t experienced with the Dallara F312, we’re confident they’ll both do a great job. Actually, Kevin doesn’t have any real experience at all in F3 but he’s highly regarded as a bit of a superstar.”

Korjus, who has been racing in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series for the past two seasons, will be making his Macau debut at the weekend but the 19-year-old knows the Galaxy Double R crew well having first tested with the team back in 2010, after winning the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title.

Swedish driver Eriksson returns to Macau for the second time, off the back of a dominant year in the ATS Formula 3 series where he claimed the championship with a sensational tally of eight victories and a total of 18 podiums.

This coming weekend’s event, though, will be the 21-year-old’s first competitive experience at the wheel of a current specification Dallara F312.

Galaxy Double R still holds the distinction of being the last British team to win in Macau, a success which came in 2006 with current Indycar racer Mike Conway, off the back of the Kent driver winning that year’s British Formula 3 Championship with the team.

During the 2011 event, Galaxy Double R had an almost certain podium finish stolen from its grasp when Finland’s Valtteri Bottas – the current Williams F1 Team reserve driver – had to retire on the fifth lap of the race, while running in second place, following contact with the barriers.

Official practice for the 59th Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix will take place on Thursday, 15th November, with the opening qualifying session getting underway at 14.40 local time (06.40 GMT). Following an additional practice on Friday, 16th November, second qualifying will start at 14.35 (06.35 GMT).
