Da Costa: Macau win does not resurrect F1 dream

Macau Grand Prix winner Antonio Felix da Costa admits his triumph will change ‘nothing’ in his career, as he insists it will not rekindle thoughts about a shot at Formula 1.

The Portuguese driver delivered a brilliant performance in the prestigious street race – winning both the qualification race and main event despite having not competed in F3 car for three years.

But although he edged out a host of rising stars who are gunning for a grand prix career, da Costa says his F1 opportunity has long gone and he is content to focus on Formula E plans with BMW.

When asked by Motorsport.com about what his second Macau triumph would do for his future, he said: “Nothing. In a way it feels a little bit of a revenge result.

"No sponsors on the car, nothing – we tried to get them but no interest. So a little bit of a revenge result. My future is BMW and that is my family now.”

Pushed on whether he does at least take satisfaction from the performance reminding people of his talent, he said: “It doesn’t matter. I know it. I see all the young guys in F1 that I raced against doing well and that relaxes me a little bit. I am happy to see them in F1, enjoying their life and I am enjoying mine.”

No F3 return

Having had a late call up by Carlin to race at Macau, da Costa said that this will be his last outing in an F3 car – and any return to the street circuit in the future will purely be in the GT race.

“I can’t come back. I can never come back,” he said. “This is not for me any more. This is for the rookies and the guys that need to go to F1.

"I am not going to F1 any more, so this was my last ever Macau in an F3 car. I am going to come and do it with the old boys in GTs.”
