Felix Rosenqvist claimed his second win of the season when the FIA Formula 3 European Championship reached Hockenheim this weekend. The Swede used an extraordinary start to grab the lead from fourth on the grid in Sunday’s concluding race, as he repeated his success of Silverstone from three weeks ago – where he scored his first triumph of 2013.
Rosenqvist leaves the German Grand Prix venue having cemented his second place in the overall standings, after having added to his points tally by finishing eighth and tenth respectively in the opening two races of the meeting – results which were compromised by the Mücke Motorsport man encountering traffic on his flying laps in the first segment of Friday qualifying. In the second qualifying outing, however, Rosenqvist proved to be a pole position contender, eventually ending up on the second row in the 29-car field – just 0.169 seconds adrift of first place.
Sunday’s victory marks Rosenqvist’s fourth F3 triumph at Hockenheim.
“A great way to end the weekend, and it feels fantastic to have won at Hockenheim once again,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “We had to fight an uphill struggle following the issues of Qualifying 1, and that unfortunately hurt us quite a lot in the first two races – and we probably haven’t had quite the outright pace we were hoping for this weekend. I knew it would take a perfect race with no mistakes to win today, and that makes this victory extra special. I made a really good start and managed to defend my lead over the first half of the race, and the car then came into life for real during the second part, which enabled me to build a gap over the rest of the field. We still have some work to do before we are where we want to be, but the team has done a great job this weekend and we’re moving in the right direction. They really deserved this success.”
The FIA Formula 3 European Championship resumes at Brands Hatch, Great Britain, on May 17-19.
