Lally beats the rain and majority of the GTC field in No. 27 Tully’s Coffee Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada (July 19, 2013) – Patrick Dempsey, Andy Lally and Dempsey Del Piero Racing were on the pace Friday in unofficial opening practice for this weekend’s Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park where Lally was second fastest in the GTC class in the No. 27 Tully’s Coffee Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
Lally’s top lap time of 1:22.667 was turned in the first half of the scheduled two-hour practice that went green just as the sky went dark with the threat of rain. The clouds finally opened up halfway through the session but not before the Dempsey Del Piero team turned in some solid laps on a track Lally knows well.
“I have been coming here every year since 1995,” Lally said. “It is definitely a track that holds a lot of great memories for me. I got my first ever professional pole position here in 1997 in the Motorola Cup Series and I have won a handful of races here in U.S. F2000 and Motorola Cup Touring Cars and stuff like that. I have always had a great time and great battles here. Last year I got to compete with Flying Lizard Motorsports in the GT class and I am looking forward to some GTC racing this weekend and giving it a go.”
“Not a great race at Lime Rock but we did learn a couple of things that we will take with us and build on as a team,” Lally said. “Nothing that would apply to on-track stuff for speed, but definitely some off-track stuff, and that is all part of it.”
Revamped and renamed Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Mosport – as it is best known – has recently gone through the facility’s most significant upgrade in its more than 50-year history. Included is a pit-lane extension of 300 feet, a new event and media center, all-new asphalt at all corners and paved runoff areas at Turns 1 and 2. The 10-turn, 2.459-mile road course is still among the fastest on the ALMS tour.
A two-day event, the Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix is also the first Sunday race of the year. Official practice on Saturday morning will be followed by GT qualifying that afternoon at 3:50 p.m. EDT.
